Summer Shoes To Keep Feet Cool by Tanya Clarke
Like all the clothes we wear shoes also started off as purely practical items of protection but as time evolved these items became more decorative and individual and eventually fashion was born.
Perhaps it started with the cavemen and their bearskins. Maybe one day a caveman wore his bearskin in amore rakish way and so invented a style which all the other cavemen admired and eventually copied.
Probably it was more likely a woman cave dweller wearing her deer skin in a provocative manner to get her old man more interested in her after a long day’s hunting and a headache.
The names of shoe types often give the clue as to their origin like stiletto could only be Italian.
Brogues could only be Scottish or Irish and Espadrilles must be Spanish.
Presumably covering the feet thousands of years ago was necessary because of the elements in the part of the world one lived. Most people even today can get by without wearing shoes at all.
If you lived in the hot desert lands then the sandal was a necessary piece of foot wear to prevent burning the soles on the hot sand. If you lived in the artic regions you needed fur boots just to keep your feet warm enough to prevent frostbite.
For most of us in temperate countries it is possible to get away with nothing on the feet and if you doubt that, I have seen and felt the soles of the feet of a soldier captured in World War 2 after his 3 years with bare feet building the infamous death railway.
For the rest of his life he only wore shoes when his wife insisted for weddings and so on. About the pub he owned and around the local streets in summer or winter he felt no pain and even standing on broken glass was not a problem.
The soles of the feet quickly adapt and become as tough as the best leather. Consider all other primates and other mammals with paws and consider how rare it is for even Your Cat or dog to cut itspaws.
If you have any further doubts about how tough the soles of our feet can be then consider the walking over hot coals trick It’s nothing to do with mind over matter it is simply that the sole of the foot can stand that brief moment of contact with the coals without being burnt.
When it is time for your summer holiday and you fly off to some hot resort with a sandy beach the shoes you take will reflect this once a year environment and the chances are you will take something like flip-flops or espadrilles in your suitcase.
Like the expression about horses for courses there is a time and place for every type of shoe and though the flip-flop may be frowned upon in the office you would look equally silly as a friend of mine did, wearing high heels at a ski resort on the ski run.
